How to Select and Plan the Fixings for Your Composite Deck
Composite decking clips secure compatible grooved boards to their supporting frame while keeping most main-surface fixings out of sight. They form part of a complete installation system, alongside starter clips, specified screws and the subframe itself.
Choosing the right composite decking fasteners means understanding which component belongs at each stage. The first row, main board runs, final board and finishing trims can require different fixing methods.
This guide explains the NeoTimber® options and how to plan quantities without relying on a single rule for every layout. Explore our decking guide for an overview, or compare the composite decking range alongside the compatible accessories.
Composite Decking Fixings: Which Type Goes Where?
| Component | Role in the installation | Planning point |
|---|---|---|
| Starter clips | Secure the first row or specified edge-board detail | Count starting-edge support positions |
| 3mm Metal FastClips | Concealed fixing between main-area boards | Create a 3mm side-to-side gap |
| 6mm Plastic FastClips | Concealed fixing with provision for board removal | Create a 6mm side-to-side gap |
| Decking screws | Secure specified board details where clips are not used | Follow profile-specific drilling and fixing instructions |
| Trim screws | Secure compatible corner and skirting trims | Calculate from the finishing layout |
Composite decking fixing clips fasten the boards to the frame. They do not replace the structural connections used to construct and anchor that frame.
Composite Decking Starter Clips: Establish the First Row
NeoTimber® composite decking starter clips hold the first row of compatible boards at the starting edge. They are also used in specified edge-board installation details.
The current set includes 100 stainless-steel clips and matching screws, with an electroplated black clip finish. Establish the first row accurately before continuing, because its alignment affects the rows that follow.
Count the required positions along the starting edge using the approved support layout. Deck area alone does not determine the number: separate deck sections or a long perimeter can need more starting fixings than a simple rectangle of the same area.

Composite Decking Hidden Fasteners: Compare the FastClip Options
FastClips engage with the grooved edges of compatible boards and are secured to the supporting joists with screws. They reduce visible face fixings across the main surface; they are not a screw-free flooring system.
The two options offer different side gaps and access characteristics. Choose the approved system that suits the board, layout and intended maintenance access.
3mm Metal FastClips
The 3mm Metal FastClip fixing set uses stainless-steel clips to maintain a consistent 3mm gap between neighbouring boards. Its black finish provides a discreet appearance.
Each pack contains 100 clips with matching screws. Use the prescribed fitting sequence and tightening method rather than overtightening the fixing to eliminate all movement.
6mm Plastic FastClips
The 6mm Plastic FastClip fixing set contains 100 plastic clips with stainless-steel screws. It creates a wider, 6mm space between the board edges.
This system allows boards to be removed along the run, which can help provide access beneath the deck. Plan that access alongside borders, trims and other details that may affect removal.
Side Gaps Are Different from End Gaps
The 3mm and 6mm dimensions describe side-to-side spacing. They do not set the gap between board ends or the clearance around walls, posts and other fixed features.
Follow the current composite decking installation guidance for each junction. Using the correct clip is only one part of accommodating board movement.
How Many Composite Decking Clips Do You Need?
Base the count on the board layout and supporting structure. Main-run clips are positioned at the required board-and-joist intersections, while starter and finishing details are counted separately.
A general pack estimate can help with early budgeting, but it is not an exact requirement for every design. Diagonal boards, short sections, board-end joints and picture framing can alter both support and fixing quantities.
- Draw the board direction, lengths, joints and borders.
- Confirm the support spacing for the exact board and application.
- Count main-run clip positions from that layout.
- Add starter clips and any specified screw-fixed details.
- Calculate trim fixings separately and round up to full packs.
Use our composite decking calculator to help estimate materials, then review the final list against the installation details. Ask NeoTimber® to clarify unusual arrangements before ordering.
Decking Screws for Final Boards and Finishing Details
Colour-coded composite decking screws provide a coordinated option where the specified detail requires a visible fixing. This may include a final board or another location where a concealed clip cannot be used.
Follow the method for the exact profile. Drilling requirements, screw position and the remaining board section matter, particularly with hollow boards. Do not copy a generic face-fixing method from timber decking.
Count screws from the approved detail and support positions rather than assuming one pack covers the same number of boards in every application.

Trim Screws for the Deck Perimeter
Composite decking trim screws are intended for compatible finishing components, including corner and skirting trims. Select the colour and screw specification for the chosen component.
Review our decking edging options before finalising the perimeter. Follow the instructions for support, drilling and movement allowances; adhesive should not be assumed to replace required mechanical fixings.
Adding more screws is not an automatic answer to heavy use. The board, trim, supporting frame and complete design must suit the application.

Checks Before You Start Fixing
- Confirm compatibility: use fixings approved for the selected board and supporting material.
- Inspect the frame: resolve unsuitable supports or connections before covering them.
- Read the sequence: starter edges, main runs and perimeter boards can have different methods.
- Allow for movement: check ends, corners and fixed objects as well as clip spacing.
- Check pack contents: do not assume a drill bit, driver bit or spacer is included unless stated.
- Keep the documentation: retain instructions, invoices and installation records.
Review the applicable warranty terms. Compatible composite decking fixings do not automatically guarantee cover if other installation or care requirements have not been met.
Composite Decking Fasteners FAQs
Are screws supplied with NeoTimber® clips?
The current starter, 3mm Metal FastClip and 6mm Plastic FastClip sets include matching screws. Check the listing when ordering for the full contents and any application-specific requirements.
Can I use another supplier’s clips?
Do not assume they are compatible. Groove fit, spacing, screw design and the intended movement behaviour need confirmation from the board supplier.
Can I screw composite boards directly to the frame?
Use direct screw fixing only where the product guidance specifies it. Across the main grooved-board area, follow the approved concealed fixing method.
Do hidden fasteners make every fixing invisible?
No. They conceal most main-area fixings, but final boards and finishing components may require specified visible screws.
Plan Your Boards, Frame and Fixings Together
A reliable fixing plan gives each part of the deck the support and fastening method it needs. Choose the clip system early, count from the layout and resolve finishing details before installation begins.
