Explore the wider ecological impact of composite siding.

Since mankind first stepped out of the cave, we have been finding shelter from the elements by cutting down trees. Plentiful in number, flexible, lightweight and incredibly versatile, we have been using wood as a building material for many thousands of years. Hence, timber siding and more recently composite siding are favoured for our homes.

The trouble is, since the advent of the industrial age, we have been felling trees at an unsustainable rate, with ancient habitats being permanently destroyed in large parts of equatorial Africa, South America and Malaysia, not to mention huge swathes of North America and Europe.

The Facts About Timber Consumption

To offset our timber consumption, as a race we have developed replanting schemes. However, often these serve only to appease our guilt, paying lip service to the global crisis. According to research undertaken by Live Science, over half of the trees in the Amazon basin are between 300 and 1,000 years old. According to One Tree Planted, 80,000 hectares of trees are felled every day, this is approximately 15 billion trees every year!

Excessive Timber Usage Results In Global Warming

Mature trees account for a greater percentage of CO2 consumption, absorbing carbon dioxide naturally over a longer lifespan. As a result of which even replanting one tree per tree felled, cannot compensate for the loss in global carbon consumption. This is causing a rapid increase in global temperatures causing freak weather conditions, melting of the polar ice caps resulting in rising sea levels.

Why Composite Siding That Looks Like Wood Is The Greener Option

Composite siding that looks like wood is a greener option to virgin timber as it is made almost entirely from recycled and reclaimed materials. Due to the unyielding global appetite for timber, there is no shortage of recycled timber waste products. Composite siding boards are made from recycled post-industrial fibres and recycled plastic polymers to make a strong composite material which is more hard-wearing than wood and so needs neither chemical treatment or regular replacement due to fading, warping or rotting.
