Installing Composite Balustrade Posts on Concrete: Step-by-Step Guide

How to Fit Composite Balustrade Posts to a Concrete Base

Installing composite balustrade posts on concrete involves setting out the post positions, securing the metal mounts and fitting the composite sleeves and finishing pieces. Accurate preparation helps keep the posts aligned and provides the foundation for the railing sections.

This illustrated guide follows the NeoTimber® post assembly sequence. Read it alongside the current composite balustrade installation instructions and the requirements for your specified concrete fixings.

Before You Start: Check the Base and Fixings

Confirm that the concrete is suitable for the proposed balustrade and anchor arrangement. The base condition, thickness, available fixing depth and distance from edges all affect the connection. A thin topping or paving slab should not automatically be treated as a structural concrete base.

  • Check post positions against the complete railing layout, including corners and stairs.
  • Confirm that the post mount, sleeve, skirt and cap match your supplied components.
  • Have the specified fixings, drill and bit, measuring tools, marker, level and suitable tightening tools available.
  • Check for concealed services before drilling and use appropriate eye, hearing and dust protection.

Step 1: Position the Post Mount and Mark the Holes

Place the post mount with metal base J-LV-0215-36 at the planned position for your railing. Check its orientation and alignment with the other posts, then mark the fixing holes through the base plate. Diagram 27 shows the marking stage.

Step 2: Drill the Concrete Fixing Holes

Move the mount aside and drill at the marked positions, as illustrated in diagram 28. Use the hole diameter and depth required by the confirmed fixing system. Clean the holes using the anchor manufacturer's specified method before fitting the anchors.

Step 3: Prepare the Specified Anchors

Diagram 29 shows plastic anchors being inserted into the holes. Follow this step only if that fixing arrangement has been confirmed for your installation. If masonry bolts or another approved anchor system are specified, follow their instructions instead; some systems have a different fitting sequence.

Step 4: Align the Base Plate and Insert the Fixings

Return the metal post mount J-LV-0215-36 to its position and align the base plate with the prepared holes. Fit the specified fasteners in accordance with their instructions. Diagram 30 illustrates the base plate positioned over the holes.

Step 5: Secure and Check the Post Mount

Check that the mount is correctly aligned and upright, then complete the fixing procedure, including the specified tightening torque where applicable. Do not substitute a general instruction to “tighten fully” for the anchor manufacturer's requirements.

Before covering the fixings, check the post mount and base connection as directed. Diagram 31 shows the mounted post at this stage. Investigate any movement or fixing problem before continuing.

Step 6: Fit the Composite Post Sleeve

Slide the composite sleeve N-JM088 over the secured metal post mount, following diagram 32. Check that it is seated and oriented correctly for the next stages of the balustrade assembly.

Step 7: Position the Post Skirt

Slide the post skirt K-LV-0119 over the sleeve and lower it to the base, as shown in diagram 33. The skirt finishes the appearance around the post base; it does not replace the structural fixing connection.

Step 8: Fit the Post Cap

Place post cap L-LV-0120 on top of the composite sleeve, as illustrated in diagram 34, following the supplied fitting instructions. Coordinate this finishing step with the remaining rail and infill installation sequence.

Checks Before Completing the Balustrade

Once the posts are assembled, continue with the instructions for the relevant straight or stair railing configuration. The post installation is only one part of the complete system.

  • Check the post layout, alignment and all structural connections.
  • Confirm that rails, brackets and infill are correctly fitted.
  • Verify the finished installation against the project specification.
  • Keep the area protected until the balustrade is complete and ready for use.

Installing Composite Balustrade Posts on Concrete: FAQs

Which fixings should I use?

Use the anchor system confirmed for the post mount, concrete base and intended loading. The illustrations do not establish a universal fixing specification. Confirm the required type, size, embedment and installation method before drilling.

Can I use ordinary plastic wall plugs?

Do not assume ordinary wall plugs are suitable for a balustrade connection. Use only the specified fixing arrangement for the application, even where a diagram depicts a plastic anchor.

How deep should the holes be?

The required drilling depth and diameter depend on the selected anchors and base. Follow the fixing manufacturer's instructions rather than estimating from the illustrations.

Can the posts be installed onto paving slabs?

Paving slabs are not automatically a suitable structural base. Establish the construction beneath them and confirm the required connection before installing posts.

Does the composite sleeve secure the post?

No. The metal mount and its connection to the base provide the structural fixing. The composite sleeve, skirt and cap finish the post assembly.

Can I install the posts myself?

This depends on your competence and the project requirements. If you cannot confirm the base suitability or fixing design, resolve those details with the supplier or an appropriately qualified professional before starting.
