Composite Fencing With Concrete Posts: A Retrofit Planning Guide

composite fencing with concrete posts

Refresh Your Fence While Retaining Suitable Concrete Supports

Composite fencing with concrete posts can be an option when you want to replace tired panels without removing sound existing supports. NeoTimber’s compatible aluminium inserts create channels for the boards, allowing a new panel assembly to work with suitable concrete posts.

The important word is suitable. Post condition, foundations, spacing and channel dimensions all need checking before you choose a retrofit. Inserts adapt a compatible connection; they do not repair a damaged post or strengthen inadequate foundations.

This guide helps you decide what to assess and measure before ordering. Explore our fencing guide for an introduction, or browse the composite fencing collection for product options.

Can You Keep the Existing Concrete Posts?

Begin by assessing the whole support arrangement, not just the visible concrete. A post can look straight while having movement at its base or foundations that are unsuitable for the proposed fence.

Check What to establish
Condition No unresolved cracking, spalling, exposed reinforcement or other damage
Foundations Suitable support for the proposed height and exposure
Alignment Posts positioned appropriately for the intended panel assembly
Channels Dimensions and condition compatible with the selected inserts
Openings Enough space for boards, channels, rails and specified clearances
Layout Ends, corners, slopes and gate connections resolved

Seek an installer’s assessment if supports lean, move or show damage. Do not treat keeping an old post as a saving until you know it can serve the new installation.

How Concrete Post Inserts Work

The NeoTimber® concrete fence post insert is a powder-coated aluminium profile designed to fit a compatible exposed channel in a concrete post. It provides a suitable connection for the composite board system.

The current product specification lists dimensions of 46 × 36 × 1800mm. Check those dimensions and the complete fitting requirements against the actual posts before ordering. This is not a universal fit for every concrete post or any flat concrete surface.

The boards, inserts and top and bottom capping rails work together as an assembly. Confirm which components are included in your selected package and which need to be ordered separately.

For detailed fitting advice, read our guide to attaching composite fencing to concrete posts alongside the current product instructions.

Measure the Opening Before Choosing Boards

Record the opening between each pair of posts, the channel dimensions and the proposed finished height. Take measurements at more than one position to identify variation or posts that are out of alignment.

Board length alone is not the same as the required opening. Channel engagement, rails and allowances for movement affect the assembly. Use the installed dimensions in the fencing installation guidance.

  • Measure each bay individually rather than assuming all openings match.
  • Check how the bottom rail will be supported.
  • Confirm any existing gravel board or base detail is compatible with the new arrangement.
  • Account for ground level changes along the run.
  • Resolve corners, ends and access points before buying materials.

Can the Boards Be Cut to Fit?

Where permitted by the instructions, boards can be shortened using suitable tools and methods. Measure with the required engagement and clearances in mind; do not simply cut to the visible opening.

A narrower opening may be adaptable, but an oversized span should not be solved by reducing board support or inventing an extension. Confirm the specification with the supplier before changing the layout.

Choose a Finish That Works With the Retained Posts

The visible concrete will remain part of the garden design. Compare board samples beside it, together with your paving, planting and brickwork. A complementary finish can create a coordinated boundary without needing every surface to be identical.

The Deluxe board offers woodgrain and brushed faces, while the Slatted board provides a pronounced linear profile. Review the colour guide and request samples before selecting a full run.

A decorative screen may be possible within a compatible configuration. Confirm its board quantity, fixing details and finished height rather than assuming it can be added above any panel. Open cut-outs can also change visibility through the boundary.

Compare the Full Retrofit Cost

Retaining suitable posts may reduce removal work and new materials. However, include assessment, inserts, rails, boards, fixings, delivery and labour when comparing the retrofit with a complete replacement.

If some posts need replacing or foundations need remedial work, include those costs too. Reuse is not automatically the least expensive or most practical option for every boundary.

Follow the Approved Fixing Details

Use the current instructions for the selected insert and post arrangement. Do not drill into reinforcement, choose improvised anchor positions or modify damaged concrete to make a component fit. Ask for clarification where the existing construction or required fixing is uncertain.

Allow for safe removal of old panels and appropriate handling of new materials. Once assembled, check alignment and connections before considering the installation complete.

Plan for Ongoing Care

NeoTimber’s capped finish avoids routine painting or staining, but still needs suitable cleaning. Inspect retained posts and connections as well as the board surfaces.

Follow the maintenance guide and read the applicable warranty terms. Product cover does not make unsuitable existing supports acceptable or guarantee an unchanged appearance indefinitely.

Concrete Post Retrofit FAQs

Can composite fencing be fitted between concrete posts?

Potentially, with compatible inserts and suitable posts and foundations. Assess condition, dimensions, spacing and the proposed fence specification first.

Will NeoTimber’s inserts fit every concrete post?

No universal fit should be assumed. Compare the listed insert dimensions and current fitting requirements with the actual post channels.

Do inserts repair cracked posts?

No. They provide a compatible board connection, not a repair or strengthening system for damaged concrete or inadequate foundations.

Can I retain the existing gravel boards?

Check their condition, position and compatibility with the required rail and panel support details. Do not assume an existing base arrangement suits the new system.

Can boards be cut for a shorter opening?

Where permitted, follow the cutting instructions and specified engagement and clearances. Confirm the complete layout before shortening boards.

Is retrofitting always cheaper than new posts?

No. It may reduce material and removal work, but assessment and any remedial work affect the result. Compare complete quotations for both options where necessary.
