The elements can play absolute havoc on your outdoor design, so it is important to try to weatherproof your garden where possible. Fierce winds can knock over or uproot your fencing, and cold snaps can kill off or disrupt your planting. Gardening is a constant war against the weather, and at NeoTimber®, we want to do our upmost to help you prepare. In this blog article, we will outline some simple ways to effectively weatherproof your garden, from investing in garden rooms, to installing composite fencing. Let’s late a look…

A Protected Surface

Making sure your fencing is effectively weatherproofed can have an enormous impact on the overall visual quality of your garden space. Timber fencing panels will need to be painted and treated with preservatives to protect the surface of the material from the effects of moisture. Whilst this is initially effective, this will need to be reapplied ever year as the paint and preservatives thin.

In contrast, the surface of composite fencing is wrapped in a thin polymer layer, which keeps the material within safe from moisture. This capped surface also has the advantage of being extremely easy to clean, only needed a simple wipe down every 6 months or so to keep your fencing looking its best. It is also afforded by a 25-year residential warranty, so you can rest easy, knowing that your fencing is built to last.

Planters & Garden Rooms

When growing produce, you may look to invest in terracotta or timber planters. However, both these materials have disadvantages. Terracotta is likely to shatter if knocked over in high winds, and timber is susceptible to rot, and may eventually splinter and decompose as a result. Alternatively, our recycled plastic planters offer a perfect weatherproof solution, with its compacted, moisture resistant surface. Available in a dark brown, with a textured finish, it seamlessly blends in with the natural colours in your garden, despite being made from an artificial material.

To protect your plants from the weather entirely, you can pot them under shelter, using small garden grow tunnels, or an outdoor room, such as a shed or a greenhouse. These help to keep a consistent temperature for your plants to thrive in. If you choose a shed, you can decorate the exterior with our composite cladding options, for maximum modernity. The Slatted composite cladding boards especially imbue a sense of smart sophistication, and provide an additional weatherproofing for the shed’s surface.

Strong Foundations

One of the main issues with timber fencing, is that the posts can be easily knocked out of place, or even uprooted due to the effects of strong winds. NeoTimber’s composite fencing solution is designed to be installed onto both hard ground and soft ground, with its post supports either bolted into place, or buried underneath the ground and concreted in. The metal framework of our composite fencing helps to give it a greater strength.

Should you choose to keep your pre-existing timber or concrete posts, with our specially designed inserts, you can easily slot our composite panels into place. The top and bottom rails act as a channel for the stackable boards to be placed on top of one another. This helps you to effectively weatherproof the fencing that you have pre-installed, and prevents higher amounts of unnecessary wastage.

Like timber fencing, timber furniture will need to be appropriately treated to keep the surface of the material from rotting.
