Let’s investigate exactly how resistant NeoTimber’s composite timber cladding is to the elements of wind, rain, heat and ice.

Any building material which is going to be exposed to wind, rain, heat and ice needs to be resilient, hardy and long-lasting. Unfortunately, timber does not offer these properties in the longer term and, without regular treating, will ultimately succumb to fading, peeling, warping, cracking and eventually rotting. So timber is out. But as an alternative, composite timber cladding offers an alternative. In this article, we explore just how weatherproof composite timber cladding panels truly are…

What Is Composite Timber Cladding?

Composite timber cladding is a building material which has been devised and engineered as a long-lasting, no-maintenance alternative to timber. Like all composite building materials, composite timber cladding is made from a combination of wood and plastic. Plastic bottles are melted down and mixed in with industrial wood fibres to make a thick composite, which is poured into a mould and hardened to create a flexible, durable material. This material is strong, weatherproof and retains its shape for many years.

What Makes Composite Timber Wall Cladding Waterproof?

Plastic bottles are made from PET plastic. PET stands for Polyethylene Terephthalate. Ethylene is a by-product of crude oil and terephthalic acid is a chemical compound which includes turpentine. Combined, the two make for an extremely water-resistant material. However, PET deteriorates into micro plastics which find their way into the food chain by being consumed by plankton, fish and other sea life. By using only recycled plastic, NeoTimber® are actively involved in preventing micro plastics from finding their way into the ocean.

How Weatherproof Is Composite Timber Cladding?

Composite timber wall cladding is extremely weatherproof. The plastic elements within the composite material are bound to the wood fibres by the manufacturing process effectively coating the timber against moisture absorption. Resisting the effects of rain, snow and ice, composite timber cladding does not rot, warp or crack. Engineered with built in UV inhibitors, the capped range resists fading keeping its original colour. Its’ strong, but lightweight construction means that it can be used to clad an exterior wall. Due to the design of the tongue and groove locking mechanism, it is also resistant to high winds.
