An introduction to NeoTimber’s shadow gap composite cladding.
We’ve all seen it – lifestyle, DIY, and home renovation posts are all the rage nowadays. People are spending more time on making their homes look beautiful inside and out than ever before, and NeoTimber® sits at the heart of it. Whether our composite decking is helping homeowners create serene outdoor spaces, or our composite cladding is allowing them to modernise their home’s exterior, we’re a great point of reference for what you can do with your property.
Today, however, we focus on something a little more specific – namely the use of shadow gap cladding, In this article, we’re going to introduce you to what exactly shadow gap cladding is, why its installation is so popular, and what aesthetic benefits it offers. Comfy? Good. Let’s take a look…
What Exactly Is Shadow Gap Cladding?
As the name suggests, shadow gap cladding is cladding designed with slats to contrast with a shadow. It’s generally accepted that a shadow gap is when you create a pronounced profile with a minimum 10mm gap, allowing a dark shadow to form between the slats. This shadow is intended to cause contrast with the profile of the cladding. Initially, it was used as a practical tool in creating acoustic barriers. However, as trends have evolved, shadow gap cladding has become a smash hit with domestic customers as a building material.
How Do You Traditionally Achieve Shadow Gap Cladding on a Budget?
If you’re on a tight budget, you can recreate the shadow look by fitting thin timber battens onto a timber subframe. You may choose to place a black membrane between the subframe solution and the battens for that dark black shadow gap, but this is optional. The current design trend is leaning toward Canadian Red Cedar timber battens. However, due to its global popularity and increase in shipping levies, the cladding prices for Canadian Cedar have sky-rocketed. Unfortunately, this makes it a less than ideal option, especially given its comparatively short life span against composite material.
The Alternative Shadow Gap Cladding Solution
The downside of fitting timber battens is that they’ll need staining or treating on a regular basis. Without these treatments, the wood could succumb to warping, bleaching, and rot. So, the question stands – is there a long-term solution? Thankfully, there is.
Here at NeoTimber®, we design and manufacture composite cladding that will long outlive its timber alternatives . Capped composite is a durable combination of wood and recycled plastic fibres that effortlessly resists rotting, no matter the strain placed upon it. Our slatted cladding is supplied with a 25-year residential warranty. Supplied in panels, you effectively get four ‘battens’ per board, without all the extra work that comes with drilling and screwing.
Composite Cladding Colour Options
Our slatted cladding is available in five stunning cladding colours. For that red cedar look, our teak cladding offers a warm honey-like glow, which contrasts beautifully against the darker brown shadow gap. Grey continues to be a popular colour theme for homes and garden rooms, and our grey cladding expands on this. Stone grey with a black shadow, the grey stands out to achieve that modern and sleek effect. Charcoal is an even bolder choice; visualise charcoal’s blue and black cladding contrasting with a totally black shadow for a subtle, yet effective, 3D profile. Our slatted cladding is also available in antique and chocolate, making it even easier to match your colour to your vision.
