A Composite Decking Solution For A Sloped Garden Setting

lightweight composite decking

Project Background

Richard Bolam, a NeoTimber® customer, lives in a new build traditional-style house on the perimeter of a large estate on the outskirts of the village of Wymeswold, Leicestershire. Wymeswold is an ancient village with a timeless, other-worldly feel, yet despite its picture box looks it was once an industrial hub for the framework knitting and lace-making industries.

Given that it has been a designated conservation area for almost 50 years, Wymeswold would seem a strange location to be installing composite decking, as an alternative to traditional timber, however Richard’s garden was lacking in character, being a square of turf. The patio doors opened out onto a small patio with very little room for dining. The surface of the garden was uneven and sloped away to one side.

Our Proposal

When Richard approached us – we recommended our Essential composite decking in grey colour, as it has a reduced weight for self-installation. Mr Bolam wanted to create two separate areas, one dining area and one comfy area for a sofa.

Having recently installed high fencing and having terraced the garden, Mr Bolam used planters to great effect to disguise the terracing. He also built a garden room in a shady corner to create extra space. We were able to provide the customer with the materials to build composite steps up to the decking, providing a wide area immediately outside of the patio doors for barbecues. Customer Q&A

Q – Why did you choose NeoTimber®?

A – I chose NeoTimber for several reasons, really. My main reason was the convenience. It was important to me to have decking that minimises maintenance. Composite decking only needs a clean, once every now and again, but never needs to be re-sealed, unlike timber. I found NeoTimber initially by searching online. What appealed to me about them, in particular, was the quality of the samples they sent me, and how local they were to me. They even invited me to turn up at their offices for a better look at the products.

Q – Why did you choose to use composite decking?

A – I wanted a composite deck board that wasn’t too heavy for installing. I’d seen a few alternatives online. Many of them seemed to skimp on materials by moulding boards with large square cavities extruded, which I felt weakened the boards.

Q – What was there before the NeoTimber® decking?

A – I’d previously had only a 3m x 4m concrete patio, laid by the builder. I wanted new seating areas to make the most of the sunlight.

Q – Which of our composite decking ranges did you choose and why?

A – In my opinion, the round holes in the essential range dramatically reduce weight, without compromising on strength. This was why I chose the Essential grey composite decking.

Q – How do you feel about the decking now the job is finished?

A – The FastClip system is really very good, it’s simple to use to secure the boards. I am very happy with the finished product; the decking has had a great reception and looks brilliant. My friends and family absolutely love it, it has truly transformed my garden.
