There’s no such thing as a 100% stain resistant composite decking, but here’s some useful tips to guide you should a spill occur.

Over the last 10 – 15 years, we Brits have slowly transitioned from a small, paved patio to a wide all-encompassing deck which we use as an outdoor living room. Fulfilling these duties is demanding on the life of a deck, it must be capable of withstanding intense use, be wipe clean. In short, we modern consumers demand stain resistant composite decking. A wooden deck cannot offer this kind of resilience; the degree of protection provided is dictated by how recently it has been sealed.

Given the amount of use your deck is going to receive, it’s wise to protect it to make sure that it is a beautiful place to make memories for many years to come. You can do this by choosing the right composite decking solution for your needs and treating stains in the correct way as to not cause further damage to your deck. We understand that mistakes can happen and below, we offer an action plan on what steps to take should the odd spill occur on your NeoTimber® deck.

Dealing With Stains On Our Traditional Composite Decking

Traditional composite decking (our Essential & Classic ranges) is a 70:30 split of wood and plastic fibres and can become damaged if exposed to staining. Should you need to treat a spot stain on traditional composite material there are a few handy tips we can offer to assist in lifting the stain.

  • In the first instance, scrub with warm, soapy water using a soft-bristled brush. Avoid using a scourer or yard broom as this can scratch the surface of your deck.
  • Should you wish to – you may use a pressure washer, but be careful to apply with no greater than 3100 psi. Hold at least 20 cm away from affected area, with a fan attachment to spread the water evenly, reducing the risk of damage to your deck boards. Move the lance up and down taking care not to focus the pressure on one area only as doing so can cause the boards to splinter.

For stubborn stains, such as oil and grease marks – it may be necessary to apply specific treatment to the stained area, in addition to the general cleaning methods above:

  • Be sure to treat the affected area within seven days.
  • You may need to use a water-based composite decking cleaner, such as Owatrol Compo-Clean. This is designed specifically to remove oil from the surface of composite deck boards.
  • Our traditional boards have a naturally textured surface. You may sand the surface of the stained area lightly with 60 grit sandpaper. This will remove the surface layer of the board and with it, the stain. Initially, the surface of the deck board will appear a lighter tone than the rest of the board but this difference blend over time.

Dealing With Stains On Our Capped Composite Decking

Capped composite decking (our Advanced and Deluxe ranges) is a second-generation material which overcomes the issues that traditional composite encounters. The wood and plastic composite material still forms the core and main structure of the deck board, giving it that unique mix of strength and flexibility. However, capped boards are sheathed in a plastic polymer sleeve which effectively locks out all moisture and makes treatment of stains a far easier process.

This easy-clean surface simplifies dealing with ice cream, red wine and stubborn dirt. The minimal amount of wiping, with an absorbent kitchen roll for wet spills will remove surface stains, the polymer sleeve capping preventing the stain from leeching into the composite itself.

Stain Resistant Composite Decking Is Worth The Investment

Whilst it may be tempting to opt for the cheaper traditional boards, because of their stain resistant properties, our Advanced and Deluxe boards are extremely popular with pet owners, families with children, restaurateurs, decking which has overhanging trees with sap, fruit and residue and common dining areas. The ability to easily remove bird droppings, pet ‘deposits’, fallen fruit and food residue makes for a clean, safe decking for all, ensuring you can deal with stains quickly, efficiently and without any lingering stain residue.
